Further to a report published in December 2011, the Department of Health proposed the creation of regional Academic Health Science Networks (AHSN) to be the driving force behind the identification, adoption and dissemination of innovative healthcare in the NHS. The regional Networks will be crucial to tackling the NHS’s quality and safety challenges as well as improving the health and wealth of the UK.
Aligning education, clinical research, informatics, training and healthcare delivery, the shared goal of the AHSN is to "improve patient and population health outcomes by translating research into practice and developing and implementing integrated health care systems".
The creation of the Academic Health Science Network for the North East and North Cumbria signifies an exciting new step for the future of the regional health service and will bring together NHS organisations, academia, third sector and Industry partners with the commitment to improve both the health and economic prosperity of the region.
